Roye Albrighton (born Roy Albrighton, 6 February 1949 — 27 July 2016) was an English singer. He was the lead singer for the band Nektar.
Early life
Albrighton was born in Coventry, the son of Arthur and Anne Albrighton. He first learned how to play the guitar when he was ten after his brother, Arthur, who worked as a television engineer, was given an old Spanish guitar with just one string on it by a customer. Roye had the guitar repaired and learned how to play it. His first influences included The Ventures, The Spotnicks and The Shadows.Career
Roye's first bands were formed when he was a teenager, his first was The Peeps and another was called Rainbows. Albrighton formed Nektar with other British musicians in Hamburg, Germany in 1969, the band later moved back to the UK. The band never had commercial success in the UK, although their 1973 album Remember the Future, went to number 19 on the US charts. Nektar disbanded in 1982 and Roye left music to work a job. Albrighton's career in music restarted again needed he had a near-fatal experience with a liver infection, he required a transplant in 1998; he was ten months into his job managing an oil company in Iran and flew back to the UK for the surgery in March 1999, after being told he would have just weeks left to live. A donor was found and after he awoke from a two week coma, he decided to change his life around and reformed Nektar in 2000. In a 2015 interview, Roye told Louder Sound that his favourite six songs to play were "Recycle", "Astral Man", "A Better Way", "The Debate", Desolation Valley" and "Remember The Future Parts I and II".Personal life
Throughout Roye's childhood and adulthood he lived in Stockholm, Hamburg, Seeheim, Morristown, New Jersey, New York City, Regents Park, United States, and Stafford. Roye married his wife, Lyn, on 31 May 1986. During the eighteen year band hiatus, Roye worked thirteen years as a computer technician for an oil gas industry and travelled to countries such as Egypt, Syria, Vietnam, Norway and Kazakhstan. Jones died in Poole, Dorset on 27 July 2016 aged 67 after suffering from an undisclosed illness for many years. According to Nektar bassist Derek "Mo" Moore said that "His organs just gave out on him. He was fighting against the infection that grasped him until he could fight no more."References
